Safety at Home: Breaking the Cycle of Domestic Abuse
Domestic violence is a hidden epidemic tearing through our communities, crossing every income level, race, and zip code. It is an absolute violation of human dignity, yet for far too long, our system has allowed abusers to operate in the shadows while survivors are left to suffer in silence or fear. Right now, survivors are routinely forced to make an impossible choice: stay in a dangerous, abusive environment or risk homelessness and financial ruin because they lack the economic independence to leave. To make matters worse, systemic gaps frequently leave court-issued protective orders completely toothless, failing to ensure the immediate surrender of firearms or swift enforcement when an abuser violates the law. We cannot pretend to value family safety while underfunding shelters, ignoring warning signs, and leaving survivors to navigate a skeptical justice system completely on their own.
I am running for Congress to establish an ironclad federal framework that prioritizes prevention, absolute protection, and aggressive accountability. I will fight to heavily expand federal funding for emergency survivor housing, legal aid, and specialized trauma counseling, ensuring that no one is ever trapped by financial dependence. We must close dangerous legal loopholes by mandating the immediate, verifiable relinquishment of firearms when protective orders are issued and enforcing strict, uniform penalties for violations. True justice means transforming how our legal system responds—implementing mandatory, survivor-centered training for law enforcement and judicial personnel so that victims are met with respect and belief, not skepticism. Ending domestic violence requires a society that refuses to look away, and I will fiercely champion the resources needed to help survivors heal, rebuild, and live in true safety.
